Welcome to the January edition of Feather Your Nest! Around our neck of the woods, these days are chilly and filled with flurries. It's the perfect time of year to take the kids out sledding, come
 Vickie & Jo Ann
home to hot cocoa and a cozy fire and then whip up a steamy pot of soup for supper. How do you fill these winter days?

With a fresh new year ahead of us, we've got so much to celebrate with you! First up this month is our brand new cookbook, Sunday Dinner at Grandma's! If you'll recall, we asked you to help us vote on the titles of our next books and this is one that many of you loved...and what's not to love? Everyone knows that Grandma's dishes were the best-loved of any in the recipe box. These tried & true dishes are ones that have been handed down from one generation to the next.

Below, you'll not only find a recipe from our newest cookbook, you'll also find a few memories and photos of our OWN Grandmas. A Recipe to Warm You Up!
Enjoy this recipe from Sunday Dinner at Grandma's! Hope Davenport of Portland, Texas, shared it with us. She writes that her Grandma Jo has been making this satisfying soup for as long as she can remember. Hope's family loves it on a chilly afternoon...January is full of those!

Grandma Jo's Potato Soup

2 lbs. potatoes, peeled and diced
1/2 lb. carrots, peeled and diced
2 stalks celery, diced
1 onion, diced
4 c. water
12-oz. can evaporated milk
1/4 c. butter, sliced
onion and garlic seasoned salt to taste
pepper to taste
8-oz. pkg. shredded Cheddar cheese
3 slices bacon, crisply cooked and crumbled

Combine vegetables and water in a stockpot over medium-high heat. Cook until vegetables are fork-tender, 15 to 20 minutes. Reduce heat to low; stir in evaporated milk, butter and seasonings. Heat through. Ladle into soup bowls; garnish with cheese and bacon. Serves 6.

Remembering Grandma
To celebrate our brand new cookbook, we're sharing stories about our own grandmas...we'd love to hear about yours too!

There's Jo Ann behind her sister, who's blowing out the candles on her cake...Grandma Cat is in the red apron!

Growing up, I was lucky enough to have three grandmas...both my parents' parents and also my grandma's sister, who never had children of her own. Grandma Cat, as we called her, was always a part of our family celebrations and made the best birthday cake I've ever tasted. I can still remember her in her red apron, stirring up the batter with a big wooden spoon...I'm so glad she passed the recipe on to me. It's for homemade vanilla cake with chocolate buttercream frosting and it's written in her own hand. Grandma Cat's cake is the one that my kids request every year for their birthdays as well! ~ Jo Ann

When I was a little girl, visits to Grandma's farmhouse were always a treat. Not only was her table always loaded with delicious homemade meals, the farmhouse itself seemed magical to me. There was the porch swing out front, where we'd sit and shell peas from her garden, and the room with the tin roof, where I'd sleep. There's nothing like the pitter-patter of rain to lull me to sleep even now. From the water pump out back to her flower gardens where we'd spend summer afternoons, Grandma's farmhouse was simply my favorite place to be. ~Vickie
